On Araz, The Kantebury Empire has a small colony called Kwazulite. It is the most recent member country of the empire, and it's most recent colony. The capital is Port Porus.

Geography

Kwazulite encompasses a large swath of land despite its lower population. The coast is grassy with some forest patches, but it leads into a large amount of fertile grasslands that has been converted to farmland. As you get deeper inland you get dense jungles and to the north you get large swaths of grasslands. Towards the center of the territory Kwazulite claims is a large jungle known as the Ovog Mod Jungle.

Beyond that is miles and miles of grasslands. Sprinkled throughout are rare Mesas that break up the landscape. During the summer, the grasslands can dry out and approach desert-like conditions during droughts. During the fall and winter, however, it can experience harsh monsoons. There is a lake in the reason known as the 'Ghost Lake' as it only appears during the monsoon season and is the first to disappear as the dry season nears.

Towards the edge of the Territory claimed by the Empire in the West are more grasslands as well as hill region. Large Mesas are common out in this region. Many of these are homes to villages of Orange Tribe members. There are more grasslands to the northwest, badlands and mesa heavy regions southwest.

Farther west, beyond the borders of Kwazulite, are also some light mountains that can be seen. These are firmly in Orange Tribe Vibranni control, however.

History

During the time of the Imperial Expansion, the Kantebury Empire looked to Araz as an untapped potential for colonies. The great distance of the Fimbrian Ocean had caused most Kingdoms write off the new world as a 'lost cause' and only used as a penile colony or healthy alternative for religious and political threats. The threat the Yeti posed to human expansion as well as the hostility the Arazian continent as a whole posed had kept many Paorr powers in Paorr.

Still, with a thirst for expansion and the Clarusian Border Alliance they needed to expand somewhere without angering their neighbors. With Kantyre a huge financial success, they began their expansion west.

Despite the failure on Well Island, surveyors were dispatched to explore the coast of Araz for resources and potential 'threats'. After a brief altercation with a Titanian fleet which resulted in the loss of all but one, none military, ship of the northern surveyor fleet, Northern Araz was deemed too much of a risk for the resources they offered. Antiford was deemed a horrible financial risk and worth more as an ally then an enemy. The Prushian kingdoms were deemed a viable spot for invasion, but the delegations got along so well they actually were found to be worth more as a trade partner then a war of annexation would be worth.

However, it was through that friendship the southern surveyor team learned a great deal about the Vibranni culture and how the Prushian crown had overcame them. Heading south, the surveyors rated the Vibranni of the Orange, Blue, and Green tribes as low threats and living in areas with a variety of positive resources the Empire could exploit. However, it was the willingness for the Orange Tribe to negotiate a spot for a Kantebury trading post town that earned the area that would become Kwazulite a hard recommendation from the survey crew. On their return to the Imperial Court, it was almost a unanimous decision.

Instead of a three ship trading expedition, the entire armada of the Kantebury Empire landed on the shores of Araz. Troop ships beached themselves, crews getting to work dismantling the boats to start building fortifications. Troops poured into the land. Within a week, native Vibranni realized what had happened, and found themselves surrounded by troops, artillery, and cavalry as builders with materials began building forts and docks.

By the time the nomadic tribes made their way back to the coast, fortifications and small towns had been built. More soldiers had arrived, and the Empire had terms of surrender and annexation.

The Orange tribe leaders refused. By the time the closest few tribes mustered a force and approached to push back the Empire, troops had covered miles in the night. They ambushed the forces and exterminated the small army. The first two tribes were massacred, arrested, and their homes ransacked before the sun had reached noon. Survivors carried stories of this defeat to other tribes, and the Orange Tribes of the area united and declared war.

Ever since the Empire has been in a constant state of war: fighting tribal armies, defending against guerrilla attacks, and quelling uprisings from Vibranni citizens who have survived.

The new nation was declared 'Kwazulite'. In a few years it had cities, roads, harbors, and farms. Troops are still shipped in on multiple ships, and the Empire claims more and more land. Vibranni tribes who signed papers of annexation were allowed to settle and stay in Kwazulite. They were given citizenship with some exceptions: They were not allowed to vote, they could not leave West into Orange Tribe held territory, they were to live close to human settlements, and they needed to apply for the right to travel to Paorr or other Arazian countries.

Culture

Kwazulite is the farthest of the countries from the Empire, and thus has developed some of its own culture. First off, it is more connected to trading partners in Araz then across the sea.

Due to cloth, clothes, and materials from Paorr being so expensive, Kwazulite citizens have adopted more style from elsewhere, like top hats, bowlers, waistcoats, corsets, etc from nations such as Antiford, the Prush Empire, and Mercia. They also have many citizens adopt the Pith Helmet from the military as an 'outdoors' head-wear for farmers, explorers, or messengers. Although many rich, political, or military members still wear styles from the Empire's home countries, most of these styles are a bit expensive for the every-man of Kwazulite. Even Vibranni styles from the Orange Tribe have begun to take hold in poorer communities in modern times.

Kwazulite takes pride in being one of the most dangerous countries in the Empire. Araz is full of dangers Paorr and Kantyre do not have.

Most citizens make a pilgrimage back to Greater Kantebury or Jhardhandi in which to verify births and get documentation for citizenship for the Empire. However, in Kwazulite, this practice is expensive, long, and impractical. Kwazulite has many of its own offices, documents, and citizenship papers for most of its citizens. Although moderns times still has the majority of citizens happy with the Empire, this fracture from Imperial custom sows the seeds for future anti-Kwazulite sentiments in multi generational families in the country. Many younger citizens, proud of Kwazulite and skeptical of the Empire, will come to be known as "Zulies". Even in trips back to Paorr, these "Zulies" will be looked on as lesser, or second class citizens. This fracture could sow the seeds of a future separatist movement.

Industry

Kwazulite, being far from the Empire, has to provide for itself whenever possible. Most resources imported from Paorr are not raw materials. Weapons, machines, clothing, and rubber products are imported from the continental empire. Kwazulite had to develop its own small iron, lumber, stone, meat and agricultural industries to support themselves.

Kwazulite extensively searches for and mines coal to feed the machine of war. They also mine sulfur and mix it with imported saltpeter for gunpowder. However most of their munitions are empire imported so most blackpowder manufactured in the country are sold to their Arazian trade partners in Prushland, Mercia, Antiford, and sometimes Titania.

Kwazulite has a small diamond industry. Although no one has been able to set up a diamond mine itself, in many of the rivers flowing toward the ocean diamonds of various sizes can be panned out of the river. This means Monte-Diamont diamond companies have failed in establishing any holds in the region, but many independent prospectors flood to Kwazulite in hopes of making a small fortune.

Gold was also found in large quantities. Gold is used as decoration in many imperial clothes, ships, homes, and gadgets.

Kwazulite's major financial exports are agricultural, however. Although you can find a variety of farms in wheat, corn, vegetables and fruits, most of them go towards feeding Kwazulite's own citizens. However, large swaths of land are are set aside for tobacco and sugar cane. Although their tobacco farms are minimal and mainly 'sold' for imperial use, sugarcane yields large profits. Despite a large portion being brought back to Paorr and exported to Paorrian countries, the majority of sugarcane and sugar is sold to Arazian countries to the north. Antiford being their top imported of Kwazulite sugar for their luxury items. This also means candied fruits and vegetables are not an expensive treat in Kwazulite.

Kwazulite's early days also involved importing sheep, horses, and cattle for feeding the settlers. Now, animal husbandry has taken hold. Kwazulite farmers have taken to keeping native species like Chanka, Buffalo, and some deer species slowly replacing harder to upkeep cow, sheep, and horses. Animal breeding experiments have begun in recent years to breed Paorrian sheep with the rugged Arazian rams favored by the Orange tribe to attempt a more prosperous flock.

Their still booming meat industry means items such as soap, candles, cooking fat, and leather are cheap in the country, but also used for trade with the Prushian countries and Antiford.
